Synopsis: The film stars Rajinikanth playing dual role, Jagapati Babu, Anushka Shetty and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles. Music is being composed by A. R. Rahman while cinematography was headed by R. Rathnavelu. This is slated to get released only in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi language.
The movie revolves around a small village named Solaiyur and a Dam that acts as its lifeline. The MP of the village, Nagabooshan (Jagapati Babu) has plans to destabilize the Dam for his own selfish motives. A Government official who tested the Dam's strength certifies that it has a very long life. Nagabhushanam kills the official who before dying, warns the village head to reopen the Temple to save the Dam. Thus he decides to reopen the Temple which should be done by the legal heir of the Dam's engineer Raja Lingeswaran (Rajnikanth). Nagabooshan accepts it to protect his goodwill in the constituency and his wish to marry the village head's granddaughter Lakshmi (Anushka) who works as a reporter in Public TV.
After a long search, Lakshmi finds out Lingeswaran's legal heir Lingaa (Rajnikanth), a petty thief who steals small jewellery along with his companions for a living. He also harbours a lot of resentment towards Lingeswaran because he left his successors penniless. One day, he decides to steal an emerald necklace on display at a star hotel along with his gang and he makes Lakshmi his unwilling accomplice. He does steal the necklace, but by the time he goes to the Merchant to get his share, the police come and arrest the Merchant. Thus, Lingaa is forced to run away from the city to escape the police hunting for him. Lakshmi comes into his life once again and convinces him to accompany her to Solaiyur.
There, Lingaa and his friends come to know from the village head that the Sivalingam is made of Marakathamani. Since it is a very costly one, Lingaa and his friends enter the Temple, open it and clean the premises, where Lingaa picks up the pen drive. Just when the village head along with Nagabooshan visit the Temple, Lingaa and his friends start worshiping the deity grandly and the village starts worshiping. That day was Mahasivaratri, the day when Lingeswaran was about to inaugurate this Temple. The village head then narrates the story of Lingeswaran to all including Lingaa and Lakshmi. Lingeswaran is the Maharaja of Kodiyur who on his father's request becomes a collector in the British Government during 1939 and also an civil engineer from Cambridge University which was his passion. He is posted to Solaiyur where he observes the water problems before coming to a conclusion that a Dam must be built here. Also a village girl named Bharathi (Sonakshi Sinha) along with a local man Subbaiah assist him in gathering the information about the nearby villages.
He asks permission from British Government but the collector of Kochi has plans to place a railway track there. After a heated argument, Lingeswaran resigns from his post and decides to build the Dam on his own. He obtains permission from the Governor and as a counter attack, the collector is transferred to Solaiyur . With the help of villagers, Lingeswaran succeeds in building the Dam. Floods are coming and to save the Dam, supporting equipment is necessary which Lingeswaran demands. He also asks the collector to pass the orders to give the lands occupied by the farmers by the British Government. The collector uses this as an advantage while his wife looks on. The collector asks Lingeswaran to pay 100 times the value and also to credit British Government as the one behind the Dam's construction. He also puts a condition not to reveal anything to the villagers about this meeting. The next day, when Lingeswaran is paying the amount in the form of Gold, Silver and documents, he receives necessary cash, supporting equipment and documents along with an order restoring the lands to the villagers.
But the collector's men try to burn the order certificate while a traitor shows the scene of Lingeswaran giving the documents and receiving cash to the key villagers who supported him. Thus the notices of surrendering their lands to British Government are given to the villagers who are said that Lingeswaran joined hands with the British Government. The Siva Temple, which was built for the safety of the village and the Dam is about to be inaugurated. Just in time, villagers come and demand Lingeswaran to vacate who is forced to leave Solaiyur . The Temple is closed permanently and Bharathi, who loved Lingeswaran, leaves the village along with him and his assistant Subbaiah's family. The village is saved from the floods this year and the Dam stands strong. Here, the collector's wife reveals the truth and hands over the order of restoring the lands back to the villagers. The traitor commits suicide and the Dam is acknowledged to be built by Lingeswaran by laying a foundation stone with his image.
The villagers find Lingeswaran living a poor man's life and ask him to forgive them. He does but does not accept to return to Solayur to reopen the Temple, as the Dam and the Temple are signs of his achievements, which itself is enough to live. The Temple stood closed since then for about 70 years till date. Humbled by the legacy of Lingeswaran, Lingaa decides to redeem himself. He learns about Nagabooshan's evil designs and with the help of Lakshmi he exposes his true colors and saves the dam as well as the village. He leaves the village vowing to comeback after achieving something in life and unites with Lakshmi.
